The controversial last-touch out-of-bounds rule will be introduced in the AFL Women's competition next year.

The Herald Sun reports the rule change will be ticked off by the AFL Commission as early as this week.

The last-touch out-of-bounds rule has been trialed in the SANFL for the past two seasons and has generally received positive reviews, with scoring improving and the game becoming more free flowing since the change.

Under the rule, the team that touches the ball last before it goes out of bounds, as in soccer, give up possession to the opposition, who will then take a kick in.

While the AFLW was an enormous success in season one, the low scoring nature of the competition was often criticised. It is hoped the last-touch rule will have a positive impact on scoring.
