St Kilda veteran Sam Gilbert will play on into a 13th AFL season, after signing a one-year contract extension.

Gilbert has played all but three games this season, averaging 15.7 disposals.

The 31-year-old said he is looking forward to being part of the talented young group once again next season.

“I’m really excited about what we can accomplish as a group moving forward,” Gilbert said.

“We’re disappointed not to be in a better position heading into the final round of the season, but the development of individuals this season will hold us in good stead for next year.

“I’ve enjoyed my role this season, playing up around the ball in the ruck, and also being part of a pretty stable defensive group.”

Saints CEO Ameet Bains said a player of Gilbert's experience is paramount in helping the group go forward.

“Gilbo is a really integral member of our playing group and offers so much on and off-the field,” Bains said.

“He has been a great ambassador for the St Kilda Football Club and continues to play strong football."

Gilbert was selected with pick No.33 in the 2005 National Draft and has played a total of 197 games, including the club's three grand finals in 2009 and 2010. He finished third in the club's best and fairest in 2010.

He will miss today's clash with Richmond due to an abdominal strain.
