Shaun Burgoyne has re-signed with Hawthorn despite strong interest from the Gold Coast Suns.

Burgoyne has signed a one-year deal with Hawks for the 2020 season, despite reportedly receiving a longer term offer from the Gold Coast Suns.

"We’re thrilled that Shaun has re-committed to the Hawks," Hawks General Manager of Football Graham Wright told the club website.

"He has put a lot of time into this decision, weighing up the best option for both he, his family and the club, so we’re really pleased with the outcome."

Burgoyne was wanted by the Suns for a mentoring role similar to that of former teammate Luke Hodge at the Lions.

"He sets a great example for his teammates through his work ethic and professionalism, and he is an incredible advocate for his fellow Indigenous players," said Wright.

"After 18 seasons, Shaun is showing no signs of slowing down which is a testament to both his talent and strength of character."
