Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy has suffered a potentially serious knee injury in the dying moment of his side's three point loss to the reigning premiers on Sunday.

Murphy's knee buckled in a marking contest and he was assisted off the ground by trainers.

Hawthorn's James Sicily took the mark in the contest and slotted the subsequent shot on goal with less than a minute remaining to give the Hawks a narrow victory.

The severity of Murphy's injury is not yet known, with the skipper set to undergo scans in the coming days, but coach Luke Beveridge conceded it is likely the 33-year-old has suffered an ACL injury.

"We think it's bad news with Bob. It's shattering but we know what sort of character he is," Beveridge said.

Fans, players and journalists took to Twitter immediately after the match to wish one of the most loved footballers in the league all the best.
