Essendon defender Michael Hurley has sustained a shoulder injury, and will undergo surgery in the coming days to repair his AC joint.

Hurley picked up a high-grade AC joint injury in the Bombers' win over the Kangaroos, and will now be out of action for some time.

The club hope to have him back before the season is over.

“Unfortunately Michael will undergo surgery in the coming days to repair the damage to the AC joint in his shoulder,” General manager of football Dan Richardson told the club's website.

“Once the surgery is complete, we will be in a better position to clarify the length of time he will be sidelined. While it’s a disappointing outcome, we remain hopeful Michael could return to play before season’s end.”
