Former Essendon coach James Hird has reportedly been offered a position with the Fremantle Dockers ahead of the 2018 season.

SEN's Sam McClure reported the news on Friday afternoon, suggesting Dockers coach Ross Lyon approached Hird about a football position with Fremantle.

McClure says the Dockers contacted the AFL regarding Hird's possible employment, and the AFL have reportedly given Fremantle the okay.

“I can reveal to you that Ross Lyon has approached James Hird about a role at the Fremantle Football Club this season,” McClure told SEN's KB & the Doc.

“The details of the role itself are sketchy at the moment but I believe it to be a role in the football department.

“The Fremantle Football Club have contacted the AFL directly to seek a tick of approval and from quite a high position, we’ve been told there is no standing in their way from an AFL perspective.”

Hird has been out of the coaching game since 2015, after resigning following a long, drawn out process after the news of Essendon's supplements saga breaking in 2012.

The former Brownlow Medallist has been out of footballing circles for the past couple of years, returning only to the MCG on grand final day last year to hand Dustin Martin the Norm Smith Medal.
