Hawthorn has been dealt a blow in its quest to record a second win in season 2017, with defender, Grant Birchall, suffering a knee injury in the opening quarter of the Hawks' clash with Melbourne at the MCG.

In Birchall's first game back from a broken jaw, he suffered a knock to his knee in a marking contest.

He was taken down to the rooms midway through the first quarter, before emerging back on in the interchange bench with strapping on his right knee.

However, he returned from the quarter-time break with ice on both sides of his knee and his tracksuit top on, with his day over.

The Hawks took a 27-point lead into the first change, 5.4 (34) to 1.1 (7).
