Richmond superstar Dustin Martin has won the Leigh Matthews Trophy and has been named theย AFL Playersโ Association Most Valuable Player.
Martin claimed the award with 1333 votes, and edged out Geelong champion Patrick Dangerfield (776 votes) and GWS young star Josh Kelly (416).
โItโs an honour to be named MVP by the guys I play with, and against every week. Iโm incredibly humbled by this,โ Martin told aflplayers.com.au.
AFLPA CEO Paul Marsh said Martin's season had been amazing, and was impressed he could block out all of the talk surrounding his contract to play the type of football he produced all season long.
โIn a year where Dusty has dealt with a lot of off-field noise, heโs managed to not only block it out, but take his game to another level, wowing us all with his power, skill and poise under pressure,โ Marsh told the AFLPA website.
โDusty has performed at an incredibly high standard week-in-week-out this season and being named the most valuable player by his peers will no doubt be one of many awards he receives for his exceptional year.โ
In the other awards presented on the night, Adelaide skipper Taylor Walker was been named as the Best Captain in the competition for the second year in a row.
Walker has captained the Crows for the past three seasons, and led them to the minor premiership and a preliminary final berth in 2017.
The 27-year-old racked up 140 votes, and finished 15 clear of Sydney captain Josh Kennedy and 40 clear Geelong leader Joel Selwood.
Essendon young gun Andrew McGrath has continued collecting some personal accolades in his first season of AFL football, as he took home the Best First Year Player award.
The Rising Star was voted by his peers after an outstanding season, in which he played 21 games and averaged 19.8 disposals, four marks, and 2.8 tackles per game.
Rory Sloane became the second Crow of the night to pick up an award, after the tough midfielder won the Robert Rose Most Courageous Award.
Sloane missed his first game of the season last Thursday night in Adelaide's qualifying final win over the Giants, after he had surgery to remove his appendix in the pre-final bye week.
Adelaide's vice-captain beat out the likes of Selwood, GWS hardman Callan Ward, and Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge for the coveted award.
