Triple M footy reporter Tom Browne has revealed that "some industry figures" are suggesting that Carlton should pursue James Hird in hope of appointing their next coach.

"I think he’d be available for coffee if you wanted to speak to him — think they should speak to James Hird,” Browne told The Hot Breakfast.

“If you want to talk about getting Friday nights back, playing Collingwood and Essendon twice — the Blues have lost both of those double fixtures — James Hird could be their answer.”

Hird hasn't worked within the AFL coaching ranks since the end of the 2015 season.

Browne's news was reported following Paul Roos' comments suggesting that Carlton need to brave and forward thinking when it comes to deciding on the appointment of their next coach.

Hot Breakfast host and Collingwood President Eddie McGuire said that "stranger things have happened" in response to Browne's latest news.
