Dyson Heppell is set to be confirmed as the new Essendon captain today, according to reports.

The Bombers will be making the announcement at 9:45am this morning via a live stream on their website.

Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell also tweeted last night that the Bombers will be unveiling their new leadership group on Wednesday.

It began to break on twitter that Heppell will be the man to lead the Bombers in 2017.

Heppell has shown his leadership qualities throughout the Essendon supplements saga, making regular media appearances in an incredibly difficult situation.

He also led with his performances on the field when many other players suffered. Lifting his average disposals from 21.5 in 2012, to 25.7 in 2015. In 2014 he was named All-Australian and won the Essendon Best and Fairest.

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd told 3AW Heppell is the right man for the job.

“Dyson is the total package, in my opinion,” Lloyd said.

“He’s the perfect age to take over.”

More to come.
