Hawthorn will secure superstar Nick Watson's contract in the off-season after an extraordinary third season in the AFL.

When Watson joined the Hawks, he signed a three-year draft deal and, at the end of last season, penned a three-year extension until the end of 2029.

His incredible rise to AFL stardom includes a maiden All-Australian blazer, a Peter Crimmins Medal, the Mark of the Year, and arguably made him the best small forward in the competition, reflected by his 66 goals in 23 matches, including six in the preliminary final.

His agent, Nick Gieschen of CGD Sports, said he and Watson will sit down and consider re-opening talks with the club over an improved deal.

"His rise from day one has been steep and really enjoyable to be a part of. He's a great little character, and it's such a pleasure and privilege to be involved working with Nick," Gieschen said on AFL Trade Radio.

"It's hard these contracts; at the time we were rapt to do the deal, it gave him great security and obviously the AFL had changed their stance on the first contract [length], and it went out to year three.

"We were happy to do it and obviously in the last 18 months Nick's gone bang, and he's probably gone to levels we hoped he'd get to but probably didn't expect him to get to so quick.

"Once the trade period's over, we'll sit back and reflect. We'll have those conversations, I'm sure, over the pre-season, and if we could do something there, it would be great because he deserves to be paid for the star that he is in the game, but I'm sure that will come in time."

Hawthorn list boss Mark McKenzie was quizzed earlier in the week on Watson's current contract, and whether the club would be open to improving it to accurately reflect his standing in the game.

"We haven't gone too far ahead in regards to that. We always have open conversations with management groups about any players going forward," McKenzie said.

"But he has been fantastic to be able to do that in a short period of time. To see him win (the best and fairest) on Saturday night, especially at that age, was a great moment."

Watson has played 66 games and kicked 124 goals during his time in the AFL.

The Hawks have been one of the busiest clubs this off-season, successfully trading for Zach Merrett.

Hawthorn has officially lodged the paperwork required for free agent Ben King, who is departing Gold Coast.

King's arrival at the Hawks is likely to set off a forward-line squeeze, with youngster Aidan Schubert set to join the Suns via a trade.

North Melbourne's Josh Goater is also a player of interest.
