One of the leading contenders for the vacant Essendon coaching position Mark McVeigh has said he has not enquired about any senior coach roles.
The Sydney Swans assistant coach fits the bill for exactly what Bombers president Andrew Welsh would be looking for in his next senior coach.
McVeigh is an Essendon man (played 232 games for the club) and he has done impressive apprenticeships under Leon Cameron at GWS before working as an assistant coach with John Longmire and now Dean Cox at the Swans.
Speaking with AFL.com.au, McVeigh said despite reports stating that he was part of the process, he hasn't looked into any of the vacant coaching roles at Essendon, Carlton or Tasmania.
"No, not really, to be honest," McVeigh said to AFL.com.au.
"And to be fair, if I had, I probably wouldn't say too much.
"I don't really attest to the lists that you see in the media. I don't often think they're true, and often they're not if you look at history.
"For me, I don't really comment on the process. I think that's something that, if it does happen, you keep to yourself, go along quietly, and do what you need to do."
The 45-year-old has been at the Swans since the end of 2022 and is currently focused on trying to bring a flag back to Sydney for the first time in 14 years.
However, he does have an eye on leading a club in the coming years.
"I definitely hope to be a senior coach one day," he said.
"The end result is hopefully to become a senior coach in the near or distant future, for sure."
McVeigh has had experience as a senior coach before having taken over as interim coach in 2022 when Cameron was sacked by the Giants. He coached GWS for 13 games and secured four wins.
