Pantomime villain Brayden Maynard has left the field of play just minutes into Collingwood's clash with the Melbourne Demons.
Still subject to boos from Melbourne fans and their long memories, the 29-year-old Maynard appeared in visible discomfort, after coming off second best in a contest with the bigger body of Harrison Petty. In the hands of trainers and favouring his already-heavily strapped right shoulder, Maynard winced in agony.
It's been a hot start at the MCG, with superstars Kysaiah Pickett, Nick Daicos and Jordan de Goey trading exquisite finishes in the first quarter of the traditional clash.

The Collingwood backline will be under intense pressure with or without Maynard, given Melbourne's class in front of the sticks.
Update: Maynard returned to the bench shortly after his assessment at the hands of trainers, and looks likely to attempt a return to the playing surface, such is the toughness of the Pies' spiritual leader.
Update: After returning to the field and throwing himself at numerous contests, Maynard lost his feet after becoming tangled with Latrelle Pickett. Bracing his fall with a damaged shoulder, Maynard came from the field once again, with commentators speculating surgery could be on the horizon given the two dislocations in quick succession.
