Richmond acting captain Tim Taranto believes there is a long term silver lining to the club's current injury crisis.

Speaking at Tuesday afternoon's Dreamtime launch ahead of the annual match against Essendon on Friday night, Taranto highlighted the exposure of young players learning on the big stage.

"It's been challenging for sure but we've seen so many guys get opportunities and I think in the long run, it's going to be good for us, if I'm being honest," Taranto said.

"The harder it is now, the better it will be later, that's the way I'm thinking about it. So many guys are developing which might have not been the case if we had a full squad out there but you see so many guys come in now and play their role.

"We've been really competitive and we go in to every game thinking we're going to win, the same as this Friday so as I said, it's tough now but I think it will be amazing later."

During the adversity-filled 1-9 start to the season, six players have made their AFL debuts, with coach Adem Yze praising first year trio Sam Grlj, Sam Cumming and Noah Roberts-Thomson last week.

Patrick Retschko has also looked comfortable as an AFL winger, Ben Miller has been an important cog in defence, while emerging leader Jack Ross has provided important stability in the midfield.

Noah Balta has also proven a find in the ruck, an experiment which surely would not have occurred if not for the injury trauma, while Seth Campbell has provided spark in the midfield when given opportunity.

Speaking of the midfielders specifically, Taranto said: “It's been awesome. ‘Cummo' has got some adversity with his shoulder. He's playing almost with one arm and he's playing his role so well.

“He's going to be a star, I can't wait to see him continue to develop and Seth as well has been such a damaging forward for us and he got a taste of midfield last week and hopefully more time this week.

“All these things will be positive in the long run, we just have to ride this wave and if we can front up and give our best effort each week, that's all that matters.”

While there has been talk about the Tigers potentially needing to dip into their VFL program to fill the list, that prospect is looking increasingly unlikely.

Taranto said that bringing positive energy was a priority given the situation the club is in and is excited about the prospect of leading his side out in the Dreamtime fixture.

“It's really special. Such a privilege we get to be part of this every year in front of a packed crowd, wearing amazing jumpers, Friday night is going to be awesome so I can't wait,” Taranto said.
