Gold Coast star Matthew Rowell has recommitted to the Suns on a two-year extension that will take him through to the end of 2027.

Rowell garnered reported interest from a number of Victorian clubs, with Collingwood, Essendon and the Western Bulldogs among the clubs looking to lure the former No.1 pick back to his home state.

In deciding to knock back that interest, Rowell has signed an extension that will now mean he'll come off-contract when he's first eligible for free agency.

The incoming Tasmanian team is also a chance to join the AFL in time for the 2027 off-season, potentially making Rowell one of the Devils' top targets.

โ€œI love this club and the opportunities I have had to develop as a person and player on the Gold Coast,โ€ Rowell said of his re-signing.

โ€œThere's a real hunger for success from everyone at the club. We're not shying away from the fact we want to play finals and win premierships and that's something I'm excited to be part of.

โ€œWe are building something special. We want to win and make the Gold Coast community proud, and I'm looking forward to playing my role in achieving that in the years to come.โ€

Rowell's new deal will take him through to a ninth season with the Suns, having joined the club via the 2018 AFL Draft.

He has played 98 games for the Queensland club, playing at least 22 games in each of the past three years.

2024 was Rowell's career-best campaign, with the midfielder polling 25 Brownlow votes to finish seventh overall.
