Essendon veteran Brendon Goddard says the treatment Joe Daniher received after his poor goalkicking last weekend was unnecessary.

Daniher booted six straight behinds against Melbourne on Sunday before finally slotting his first goal of the afternoon early in the third quarter.

Goddard slammed Daniher's critics on Thursday morning, and said watching him miss shots on goal doesn't bother the team out on the ground.

"Firstly the approach to the criticism on Joey during the week was ridiculous," Goddard said on RSN 927.

"Joey works really hard on his game. We know as players (he is paid to kick goals as a forward but) he's not going out there deliberately trying to miss it.

"It's not demoralising out on the ground, I don't feel sorry for Joey because he is working hard on his game.

"Joey realises the situation, he is not putting his head in the sand."

Goddard added that if Daniher had kicked straighter over the course of his career he would be an "unbelieveable footballer."

"If he was to get it right he would be an unbelievable footballer and an asset to the footy club," he said.
