Greater Western Sydney captain Stephen Coniglio has been urged to consider a "fresh start" and head west in order to rekindle his best form.

Coniglio has been limited to just the three games so far this season due to an ankle injury and has had his captaincy come under question at times, as forward Toby Greene has stood up in his absence to lead the side.

The 27-year-old took up the captaincy last season following a new seven-year extension with the club, deciding to remain in the Harbour City and turn down any offers for a potential move to Western Australia.

Now, Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes believes that Coniglio should opt for a return to his home state and seek a clean slate in a trade that would suit both parties.

"He needs a fresh start," Cornes said on Nine's Footy Classified.

"I think Fremantle is an obvious place for him and a destination that would work for both clubs.

"I think it would be best for him and the club. He needs to explore going to another club.

"[The extension] was two years ago, things change and you fall out of favour with the coach. A fresh start and a new environment would work exceptionally well for him."

During his first season wearing the proverbial captain's armband, Coniglio was dropped from Leon Cameron's side late into the club's 2020 campaign ahead of a must-win clash against the Demons.

At times his place as skipper has come under question, with Sam McClure revealing the club could consider co-captains for next year.

"I think he might have to come around to [the idea of co-captaincy]," McClure said.

"As we sit here tonight, there is a really strong chance that Toby Greene will be co-captain with him next year."

Coniglio remains sidelined with injury, but is tipped to return in the coming weeks as the Giants look to break into the top-eight and return to finals in 2021.
