Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon believes injury-prone midfielder Harley Bennell should be targeted by Richmond, after he officially parted ways with Fremantle in July.

Bennell has spent four seasons at the Dockers after being traded to the club from the Gold Coast Suns, but his career has been marred by injuries and off-field incidents.

Lyon and his SEN Breakfast co-host, Sam Edmund, explained why the Tigers are the ideal destination for the former number two draft pick.

“There is one (club) that comes to mind,” Edmund said.

Lyon replied: “Richmond.”

“Most clubs are probably hoping they don’t take a punt on him, because if he works and Marlion Pickett works and Sydney Stack works, the rest of them look pretty silly," Lyon said.

The Herald Sun reported that Bennell and his manager Colin Young are set to meet with an unknown Victorian club later this month, with Young expected to provide an update on Bennell's physical and mental health.

Bennell has played 83 career games since being drafted by Gold Coast in 2010.
