Geelong midfielder Jack Steven's future is in doubt, reports AFL Media's Mitch Cleary.

Despite still having a year to run on his contract, there has reportedly been preliminary discussions about the 30-year old departing the Cats prematurely with a financial settlement.

Steven signed a two-year deal with Geelong at the end of last season but failed to make an impact in the blue and white hoops, playing just nine games in 2020 due to soft tissue setbacks.

The former Saint had a delayed start to the season as he recovered from a stab wound in May.

Steven has played 192 AFL games after making his debut in 2009.
