AFL coaching candidates Adam Simpson and John Longmire would not weigh into whether they would put their hand up for the vacant North Melbourne coaching role following the sacking of Alastair Clarkson.
Both are former players at the club, Simpson playing 306 games from 1995-2009 and Longmire 200 games from 1988 to 1999 which adds a sentimental value for the two premiership coaches.
"My first instant reaction would be, it's just happened today, so let's let the dust settle. That's my reaction," Longmire said on AFL 360.
"...I grew up there. I mean, I was 16 years of age when I when I moved down from the country and essentially grew up around the North Melbourne people. I was a North Melbourne supporter as a kid, so it's very hard to lose that sentiment and to lose that out of you. You've got a strong connection to the football club, and I've always had (that)."
Simpson, who coached with Clarkson at Hawthorn, was similarly reluctant to add significant voice to the discussion out of respect for his former mentor.
"To be honest, it's a bit of a shock, and I think Horse and I both have a relationship with Alastair, and I can't take my headspace out of him and what he's going through, and the club will work through what they need to work through," Simpson said.
"And to be brutally honest, I haven't given it a lot of thought.
"And I know that sounds a bit wishy-washy, and you're going to ask another two questions. They're going to be the same type of questions, boys. But it's a bit early... I don't want to give any type of reaction right now because I just don't know. You know, I've really set up life in a different way. I'm enjoying it. Yeah, so I just need to take a deep breath."
Simpson considered the Carlton role before opting against it and did not pursue the Essendon role, while Longmire was linked with Tasmania for a period of time and remains involved with the Swans following his resignation following the 2024 grand final defeat.
While the Kangaroos headhunted Clarkson four years ago, president, Dr Sonja Hood made clear at the club's press conference on Wednesday it did not have a preferred candidate and would canvass the market.
