Essendon defender Andrew McGrath has signed a new six-year deal at Tullamarine to remain in the red and black until the end of the 2030 season.

McGrath, who is in his eighth season with the Bombers, was one of eight restricted free agents in the AFL this year.

The first overall pick from the 2016 National Draft, McGrath has played 141 games at Essendon, with his career commencing with a 21-game debut season and the Rising Star Award.

The 25-year-old has spent time in defence and through midfield across his time with the club, with a more recent switch to the backline seeing McGrath thrive as a running flanker in Brad Scott's defensive half.

One of several key retention targets for the Bombers, McGrath has recommitted to the club for the long haul, securing his services until the next decade.

“I am super excited to commit to the football club long-term, I believe in the vision and direction wholeheartedly. My love for the playing group, support staff and coaches inevitably made this decision super easy,” McGrath said in a club announcement.

"Essendon showed belief and trust in me as an 18-year-old, and I am extremely grateful to be a one club player. Essendon is a club with rich history, and an extremely loyal supporter base.

"I hope we can make our members and supporters proud and produce performances that Essendon people can take pride in.”

The Essendon vice-captain has enjoyed career-best football since Scott's arrival at Essendon, with McGrath now playing consistent football after overcoming multiple injuries in recent years.

McGrath credited his coach and expressed his excitement for the future at Essendon.

“Brad has been an amazing leader and mentor for me, I cannot wait to continue my career under him and learn as much as I can to become a better player and better person," McGrath said.

"My belief and enthusiasm for our younger players is also something that excites me greatly. The growth in this group is enormous and I firmly believe our best footy is ahead of us.

"Our playing group is determined to grow and push our boundaries to become a great team. We understand more and more each day what that will take, and the hard work required. But I firmly believe success and improvement is in our capability.
