Former Giant and Bulldogs utility Sam Reid has joined Goulburn Valley League club Echuca for the 2022 season.

Reid, who was not offered a new deal by Greater Western Sydney for next year, has made the venture to local football in joining his brother, Ben, at the Bombers.

The 31-year-old joins Echuca after 14 years in the AFL system, first making his debut at the elite level with the Western Bulldogs in 2008.

Reid was recruited to the Kennel via the 2007 National Draft and played 10 games in the red, white and blue before joining the Giants ahead of the 2012 season.

The Queensland native played 98 games for the Giants across three stints with the club after being delisted on multiple occasions before eventually being re-listed.

Reid had revealed he hoped to continue his AFL career after his latest departure from the Giants, stating he still had a hunger to play in the top-flight.

"If I didnโ€™t have the drive or competitive edge that I have, Iโ€™d happily retire and move on from football,โ€ Reid told SEN last month. โ€œBut Iโ€™ve definitely got that.

"Even playing in the final this year against theย Swans, I feel like thereโ€™s still unfinished (business) and Iโ€™ve still got plenty left to give out on the football field."

Reid flagged discussions with AFL clubs in regards to a career lifeline, however slashed salaries and list sizes have kept clubs limited in the open player market this year.

The hard-nosed defender has now looked to link up with his brother at Echuca, with the club announcing the signing this week.

"Echuca Football Netball Club is super excited to announce the signing of Sam Reid for season 2022," the club's announcement reads.

"Sam will be living and working in Echuca and joins us from the AFL system where he clocked up 108 games with the Western Bulldogs and GWS.

"Sam joins his brother Ben at Bomber Land and we look forward to watching the Reid boys play together next year."
