Former Geelong and Carlton defender Billie Smedts will link up with ex-teammate Josh Caddy at the local level in 2023, with the 30-year-old signing with the Port Melbourne Colts.

Smedts, who most recently plied his trade for North Warrnambool in regional Victoria, will return to metropolitan Melbourne next year as a key signing for the Colts.

The Southern Football Netball League outfit will see the 47-game ex-AFL defender link up with former Cats teammate Caddy, who has taken on the senior coaching duties with the club for next season while also holding a playing role.

"It's an honour to welcome former Geelong & Carlton player Billie Smedts to the Colts for season 2023," a club post reads.

"Smedts will wear the #2, the same number he played in at the Cats.

"We can't wait to see @billie_smedts in action in 2023."

Smedts began his AFL career with Geelong in 2010 as the 15th overall selection in the National Draft. He would make his debut two years later against Fremantle.

The 189cm defender would play alongside Caddy, who called time on his AFL career earlier this year, between 2013-2016.

Smedts was traded to Carlton ahead of the 2017 season and would play just nine games in one season at Princes Park before seeing an end to his AFL career.

The Colts managed a seventh-placed finish in Division 1 of the SFL in 2022.
