North Melbourne's VFL side has confirmed the addition of former Melbourne-listed defender Deakyn Smith for the 2024 season, with the cut backman training with the Roos' senior squad this summer.

Smith spent three seasons with the Demons after joining the club as a Supplemental Selection Period addition in 2021, joining Melbourne after graduating from the club's Next Generation Academy.

While an AFL debut wouldn't arise for Smith, the 21-year-old would be a consistent performer for Casey in the VFL. Smith played 44 games for the Demons' state league side, including two finals matches this year.

After being delisted by Melbourne at the conclusion of the 2023 season, Smith has made the move to Arden Street in signing with North Melbourne's reserves unit for next year.

Smith has been training with the Kangaroos' senior side under Alastair Clarkson over the course of the pre-season, with the club's VFL program announcing the addition of Smith on Friday, adding to their ranks after a 10th-placed finish.

North Melbourne bowed out of the competition in the new Wildcard Round in August via a loss to Casey - a game where Smith had 26 disposals and six marks.

A strong enough summer stint with the Roos' senior side could open the door for a career lifeline, with North Melbourne having one list spot available for the current SSP signing window.

The Kangaroos are the only side to have a vacant list spot and not have a registered SSP train-on prospect.

The pre-season signing window is set to come to a close on February 19.
