Former Brisbane Lions ruckman Archie Smith has turned to basketball, joining NBL1 side South West Metro for the 2023 season.

The Pirates have added the 27-year-old to their roster for next year, with Smith having proven to be an athletic and tall talent in the AFL during his time in the system.

Recognised as a talented basketball as a junior before being scouted by the Lions, Smith will return to the hardwood with South West Metro.

He was an Academy selection for the Lions in 2013, joining Brisbane as the 69th overall pick in the Rookie Draft.

Smith would play 16 games in his eight seasons with the Queensland club, booting four goals as a ruck-forward hybrid player.

Smith would also play a part in three premiership wins with the Lions' NEAFL side in 2013, 2017 and 2019.

At the end of the 2021 season, Smith looked to pursue a move to away from Brisbane, however one did not arise. He instead called time on his AFL career.

Smith's father Andre Moore played in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks and was also a member of the 1990 All-NBL team in 1990 during his time with the Brisbane Bullets.
