Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan wants the AFL to resume shorter quarters and have extended bench when the AFL returns.

Fagan is't sure what the rest of the season will look like as the league aims to get clubs back to training by the end of the month.

AFL chief Gillon McLachlan insists clubs will have three-week mini pre-season before the season resumes, and Fagan wants to see necessary changes made to cater for a condensed fixture.

"I think when we come back the games in round one will be shorter," he told 7news.com.au

"I think the AFL have set a three-week period to prepare which isn't very long as a group.

"Maybe teams are going to tire a bit late in games. In round one we will find out what the trends will be across the competition with the shorter game.

"I think an extended bench would definitely be handy because you will have to be really smart in the way you manage the loads of your players.

"I think we will probably have to do that because I imagine we will be playing games much closer together so we might be in a situation where we have only got four or five days between games."
