Essendon will put former Melbourne Demons captain Jack Viney through his paces this weekend, as the club considers putting an offer to Melbourne for his services.

AFL Media reports the 238-game father-son recruit will undergo a medical at the Hangar this weekend, amid significant interest from the other side of the country, with the West Coast Eagles hosting Viney in recent days.

Viney managed just one appearance at AFL level this season - his side's Wildcard Round loss to the Blues - after an Achilles injury curtailed his year.

At his exit meeting, "robust" discussions with powerbrokers at Casey Fields ensued, when Viney was reportedly informed that youth would be prioritised over him in the years ahead, and that the club would facilitate a trade should he so desire.

Now, with a young family to consider, too, Viney's footballing future appears to be draped in either royal blue and gold, or black and red. A decision would appear imminent from Viney, as two of the league's cellar-dwellars jockey for his contested acumen and leadership qualities.

Viney is a 2021 premiership player with the Demons, a two-time best and fairest winner, and was co-captain from 2017-2019 inclusive.
