Essendon's next senior coach could be announced in a matter of days according to club legend Matthew Lloyd.
Speaking on the 3AW broadcast on Saturday, Lloyd said that all candidates had finished presenting to the club and that the Bombers were likely to make a call on who out of James Hird, Mark McVeigh or Jaymie Graham would replace Brad Scott.
"They have all met with (former Socceroo Kevin) Muscat, they have all presented to (John) Wardrop and now the last few days have been a presentation in front of the board for all the candidates," Lloyd said on the 3AW broadcast.
"I think over the weekend they will have made their decision and we should hear something maybe Monday or Tuesday."
The Bombers have been on the hunt for a new coach after the club sacked Brad Scott in May.
Lloyd, a former teammate of both Hird and McVeigh, doesn't believe either candidate would likely take up an assistant coach role at Essendon if they were to miss out on the top job.
"I think Mark McVeigh has a young family in Sydney, so it would be very hard for him to come unless he is the head coach," he said.
"One thing is, (Hird and McVeigh) are extremely close. Even through this process they are extremely close, very supportive of each other. Whoever gets it, gets it.
"They are very good mates those two, so it wouldn't shock me. But right now James is firm, couldn't be more firm that, 'I'm not here to be someone's number two'. I'm here to be the head coach."
