Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has given his support for the AFL to return to suburban grounds amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

If the AFL returns in June it would mean they would have to find alternative venues, especially if the AFL goes as deep as December, with the MCG being occupied for the ICC T20 World Cup, Boxing Day Test and the Big Bash League which also includes Marvel Stadium.

If could see AFL footy return to some of the old suburban grounds like Moorabbin Oval (now known as RSEA Park), Ikon Park and Whitten Oval.

Victoria Park and Essendon's Windy Hill could also be in the frame to host a game for premiership points.

“There’s a real opportunity to do that and that could be something that comes up again with the dramas that have been going on about whether Marvel Stadium would be available because of cricket,” McGuire said on Triple M.

“But there’s plenty of opportunities (with that).

“I think that these venues are going to play a far bigger role with the women’s football and whatever the second-tier VFL competition looks like eventually once we get things going.”
