On Thursday night's Channel Nine AFL Footy Show, Eddie McGuire suggested his thoughts on the fixture in the future.

McGuire believes that in the first 18 rounds, every team should play each other once including a bye. After the 18 rounds, the competition splits into a top 12 and a bottom 6.

In rounds 19-23, the top 12 teams will play each other in order to keep the competition interesting while the bottom six teams play each other once. AFL draft lottery should be introduced for these teams.

But McGuire thinks that in round 19, there should be a Super Round by which he means 1v2, 3v4, 5v6 etc.

"This week coming up, just when we are getting a little bit, alright where are we in the season id have a Super Round, 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, and just really pump the season up and set it ready to go into the finals series", McGuire said.

The bottom six sides will face each other so they do not get in the way of the rest of the competition. Due to this, McGuire believes that Adelaide have a genuine chance of making the top 8 since they have Carlton in the last round.

"Adelaide play Carlton in the last game. Carlton's cue is in the rack, Adelaide might make the finals and knock somebody out courtesy of the fact that Carlton's shot," McGuire said of the current system.

Finals looks to be a little different with five weeks of finals being played between the top 12 teams. The top 12 will be split into two conferences, 1-3-5-7-9-11 and 2-4-6-8-10-12.

Each conference will play the McIntyre system and the winner of each conference will go on to face each other in the AFL Grand Final.

"You get six extra finals. The main thing is the integrity would be there, there would be no dud games, would reset the last bit of the season now so that you get the best games on Friday night, Saturday night and everyone is interested in the game."

Eddie also believes that dropping the game to 90 minutes will benefit the players and since they are playing less time, they can play an extra game of finals.

"I dropped the games to 90 minutes, and that would give players the equivalent of seven and a half weeks holiday a year. Less playing time for the gun players so there is your trade offer to play an extra week of finals."

Is Eddie right? Should everyone just play each other once and then play with the fixture from there or should things remain the same?
