Hawthorn rookie Cam Mackenzie will make his AFL debut for the Hawks against Essendon this weekend, with coach Sam Mitchell breaking the news to the teenager with a fitting 'fan' letter.

Mackenzie joined the Hawks after being selected at Pick No.7 in the 2022 AFL Draft and impressed in the Hawks' pre-season game against Collingwood, amassing 24 disposals, a goal and 11 score involvements, making him one of the best on ground.

"In only a few short months since being drafted, Cam has demonstrated he's a fast learner and has an incredible appetite for hard work," General Manager of Football Rob McCartney told hawthornfc.com.au.

"He is clearly a special youngster and hasn't looked out of place in our midfield mix, showing flashes of what's to come right across our practice matches."

In a video posted to the club's social media accounts, Mitchell sat down with Mackenzie and handed the young gun a letter from a fan.

Written in French, which Mackenzie speaks fluently, the new Hawk learnt of his selection.

A Sandringham Dragons pickup, Mackenzie finished with 26 disposals and two goals in their NAB League Grand Final win last year.

Mackenzie will join young gun Jai Newcombe in the midfield, who had an impressive second season in the AFL last year, finishing third in the NAB Rising Star.

The Hawks have confirmed recruits Fergus Greene, Karl Amon and Lloyd Meek will also make their club debuts against the Bombers.

Hawthorn will host Essendon at the MCG on Sunday at 3:20PM (AEDT).
