Essendon assistant coach Daniel Giansiracusa has announced his aspirations to one day join the AFL's head coaching fraternity.

Giansiracusa began his league footballing journey after being drafted by the Western Bulldogs with the 32nd pick of the 1999 AFL Draft.

The Western Jets product enjoyed a 265-game career at the Kennel, booting 331 goals between 2001 and 2014, as well as claiming the Dogs' best clubman award in his penultimate season.

Since hanging up the boots, Giansiracusa has commenced his coaching career, starting at home on Barkly Street after agreeing to lead the Bulldogs' forwards from 2015.

Giansiracusa earned the reigns as Footscray's VFL coach in 2019 before eventually re-joining the Bulldogs' AFL coaching collective for 2020 season, a seasion in which the former forward was named as the AFL Coaches Association's Assistant Coach of the Year.

In the wake of this nod, the now-42-year-old made the move to the Hangar, taking up a post as an Essendon assistant from 2021 to today.

Speaking to 3AW ahead of Essendon's heavy Gather Round loss to Port Adelaide, Giansiracusa signalled his intent to take his career to the next level.

"That's the plan. I've got aspirations to be a senior coach," Giansiracusa said, matter of factly.

"I'm really lucky that I've got Brad (head coach Brad Scott) to learn off. I've had some good coaches that I've worked with or played under. I'm learning plenty off Brad, and I'll continue to grow in that space. Hopefully, one day, an opportunity comes up."

When pressed as to what he had learned from his superior, Giansiracusa was effusive in his praise of Scott.

"I think he (Scott) manages up really well," he added.

"I think from a holistic, club point of view - and Essendon's a massive club - I think he's across everything. But he keeps everyone on track with messaging. I think that's the consistency that I've learned.

"He's an astute operator in the way the game's being played at the moment and how he thinks it's going to in the future. He likes to stay ahead of the curve."

After going down Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval, the Bombers will earn their next shot at redemption when they return home to face the face Giansiracusa's former side, the Bulldogs, next Friday night.
