Former Tigers backman Ryan Garthwaite has signed with SANFL club South Adelaide for the 2022 season.

Garthwaite joins the ranks of Oscar Clavarino, Keegan Brooksby, Oscar Brownless and Sam Ramsay in signing with the Panthers this off-season after not being offered an AFL contract.

The 23-year-old played 14 games for Richmond after being drafted five years ago, making his debut against Geelong in 2018.

The Corowa product showed glimpses of promise during his time at Punt Road, playing a key role in the Tigers' VFL premiership win in 2019.

Garthwaite joined fellow Tigers defender Derek Eggmolesse-Smith in being delisted by the club in October, 12 months after signing a new one-year deal with the club.

The key-defender will now venture to Flinders University Stadium for 2022, with Garthwaite stating the move "felt like the right fit".

"I chose South Adelaide because I felt like it was the right fit for me and the position I want to play," he told the club website.

"The coaches and players are all good blokes and being a country kid I enjoy that aspect of it."

"I’m bloody excited to come over and meet everyone, get stuck into training and crack in next year."

The Panthers amassed a 10-8 record this year, reaching the preliminary final before having their season cut short in a 28-point loss to Glenelg.
