Carlton will throw prized recruit Zac Williams straight into their midfield for the start of the season.

The 113 gamer predominately played as a half back for the Giants but has trained solely with the Blues midfield group in preseason and coach David Teague declared that is where he will start the season.

"We're training Zac with our midfielders," Carlton coach David Teague told AFL.com.au reporter Riley Beveridge.

"He's been quite good and he's brought some experience of playing in there from a different system. He's helping the guys around him, but we're definitely training him up as a midfielder."

The Blues added depth off half back by acquiring Adam Saad from Essendon, meaning Williams has more opportunities to test himself in midfield, a position he was eager to explore upon his move from the Giants.

Arguably his best game for the Giants came when he played in midfield against Collingwood in the 2019 preliminary final and collected 25 disposals and 10 clearances.

The Blues kick off their season with a preseason clash against St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on March 4, before their annual season opener against Richmond on Thursday, March 18.
