Greater Western Sydney recruit Tendai Mzungu has been dealt a cruel blow after just his first game as a Giant.

Mzungu injured his hamstring in the second term of the Giants' round one loss to Adelaide with the club confirming he will miss 10-12 weeks.

The 31-year-old was recruited by the Giants in last year's rookie after he was axed by Fremantle after 102 games.

Meanwhile, forward Jon Patton is racing the clock to be fit for this week after hurting his hip during round one.

The club will assess the 23-year-old during the week after he spent an extended period on the bench during the game.
