Former Western Bulldogs and Essendon star Adam Cooney has revealed details of a physical confrontation he and current Fremantle coach Ross Lyon had back in 2009.

Lyon was the head coach of St Kilda at the time, and Cooney recalled having a lengthy chat with Lyon at Michael Gardiner's wedding, before things turned sour quite quickly, courtesy of Cooney's actions.

"I actually had a good chat with Ross for about an hour prior to that, we were sitting down so I thought we were pretty good pals at that stage," Cooney told Fox Sports.

"I never drink white wine and I'd had maybe one too many sav blancs, so I thought I might just try to execute a rear naked choke-hold on Rossy and he didn't take it too well.

"His quote was if you weren't a Brownlow Medallist I would have knocked you out, so I was lucky the medal came in handy. I wouldn't be doing it again."
