Brisbane Lions midfielder Hugh McCluggage is contracted until the end of 2024, but the Lions are keen to start talks on an extension as Victorian clubs prepare to make a push to bring him home.
McCluggage capped off another impressive season with a third-place finish in the Merrett-Murray Medal, averaging 22.3 disposals, 3.6 tackles, and 3.8 marks a game this year.
The former No.3 pick had a strong finals series, with his grand final performance placing him as one of Brisbane's best with 21 disposals, five tackles, and two goals.
Player agent David Trotter said onย Gettableย that McCluggage was "really happy" at the Lions, with contract talks to start over the off-season.
"Hugh is really happy up there. I think we will start talks over the summer. Hugh doesn't really like doing contracts during the year," David Trotter said.
"We all know he is a great player, he's a leader, a great person. When Hugh gets back from overseas we will start talks."
McCluggage is a 'pre-agent' this off-season, with the Lions star eligible for free agency in 12 months time.
Kai Lohmann and Deven Robertson were uncontracted beyond 2024 but have recently signed new deals, whilst Tom Fullarton is anticipated to move to Melbourne.
Dayne Zorko remains without a contract for next season but is expected to play on for a 13th year.
It's been a busy week for Brisbane, who picked up Tom Doedee from the Adelaide Crows via free agency, with the Crows gaining an end-of-round-one compensation pick as compensation.
