AFL footy has several fierce rivalries that drive supporters mad. But none are quite as fierce or have the history behind it like the Collingwood-Carlton rivalry.

The two sides first played each other in 1897. They have met 254 times, with Carlton winning 127, Collingwood winning 123, while there have been four draws.

While the majority of footy fans know the dislike between the two clubs, many may not be aware of just how much hatred there is.

SBS Viceland's 'Vice World of Sports,' explores the immense disgust the two sets of fans feel for each other and what it actually means to beat them each year in an enthralling look at the game and one of its fiercest rivalries.

In the TV network's series, 'Rivals,' they look at fierce rivalries in sports all over the globe and the Collingwood-Carlton compares to some of the best in the world.

Iconic Collingwood cheer squad member, 'Joffa', tells host Selema Masekela, he cannot even utter the world, 'Carlton'.

"To be quite honest with you, I don't like saying their name," Joffa says.

"I'd rather use scumbag, or filth, there's a big hatred here."

The American host is new to the game, but he can understand one thing quite clearly. The passion footy fans feel for their team is almost unrivaled around the world and the excitement and raw emotion on show is spine tingling.

Lifelong Pies' fan, Justin Witcombe, explains his incredible staunch support of his club and it is simply incredible to hear the lengths he will go to.

"My four-year old, when she was born, there's was a Geelong player's mum working at the hospital, working in the maternity ward...I grabbed the Collingwood jumper and made sure that the Collingwood jumper touched her first before the Geelong lady," Witcombe, who has the Peter Daicos' legendary No.35 tattooed on the side of his head, said.

Rivals airs this Sunday night at 9.30pm on SBS Viceland (Channel 32).

Other episodes in the series include Argentine soccer's Boca Juniors v River Plater in Argentina and the battle of Algiers in Algeria.
