Retired AFL player and Carlton star Sam Docherty has bravely revealed his troubled history with gambling, saying he hid his problems due to the "shame and guilt".
Docherty, who retired from the AFL at the conclusion of the 2025 season after 184 games, has teamed up with the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) to promote safer gambling practices, including setting limits as part of this year's Gambling Harm Awareness Week.
"I've had my struggles with gambling in the past, and now I set a weekly deposit limit," Docherty said.
"I've found it really helps keep my gambling activity in check. People struggling with gambling harm can feel stuck and alone because of feelings like shame and guilt - and I want them to know that it's okay to seek help.

"It's important that people, especially young guys, think about their actions before they place a bet. I wouldn't take to the field without warming up and making sure my body was match fit. Setting a limit is the same. It will help protect you."
Docherty says he still gambles today, but acknowledged the financial access being a professional footballer provides, as well as life stresses, led to his gambling troubles.
"Finding healthy ways to be able to do anything in life, and being able to do the work, to be comfortable with what you're doing and your habits," he said on 3AW.
"There's so much stress in everybody's lives, and where that stress outlet can be for you can lead to a spot where you're doing some stuff that ideally you're not doing as much as you'd like.
"One part is recognising that, and the other is putting in healthy steps to do that.

"I'm not here to tell anyone not to gamble, and that's not the story I want to tell. The campaign line of 'set before you bet' is why having a conscious thought... It's about setting parameters and boundaries and habits that you're comfortable with to do that.
"For me, it's been setting a deposit limit. It keeps my gambling in check. I still enjoy going to the races and putting an odd bet on, but providing an environment that is healthy for myself and lifestyle.
"Ultimately, the reason why I said yes to this campaign, is to start these conversations."
Docherty has partnered with NRL superstar Cam Munster for the VGCCC campaign.
