Carlton's 2019 first-round draft pick Brodie Kemp is finally set to make his debut for the club, having overcome a mountain of injuries in the last two years.

Taken at pick 17 in the 2019 draft, and widely thought of as one of the most versatile players in that draft class, Kemp then spent two years on the sidelines before finally turning out for Carlton's VFL outfit in his first appearance for the club at any level during May this year.

He ruptured his ACL during July of his draft year, causing him to miss his entire rookie season, before also doing a syndesmosis injury during January of this year at training.

Kemp has also suffered from back injuries, but has now been able to put together a consistent run of form at VFL level, leading to his long-awaited debut in Round 22 against the Port Adelaide Power this Saturday afternoon at the Adelaide Oval.

Through an official club statement, the Blues said he will be playing as a defender this weekend when he debuts at the top level.

Kemp, a product of Bendigo, has displayed his potential as a junior when he averaged 20 disposals per game in the 2019 under-18 country national championships, while some figures in the Carlton coaching staff have previously spoken of their surprise at how quickly he adapted to the VFL despite not playing a game for two years.

VFL coach Daniel O’Keefe said in July that Kemp had recovered fantastically from his injuries.

“He’s done an amazing amount of work with his rehab and whatnot to get back to playing his first game for the Carlton Football Club,” O’Keefe said to the Carlton club website in July.

“He’s building blocks towards where he wants to get to with his footy. A big part of that is finding his feet back on-field and he’s starting to do that.

“His first game back was really strong for us and probably surprised a few with how much impact he had on the game after so much time out.

“Early days, he made me a bit nervous! The way he was moving laterally off the back of his knee injury, he’s been great.”

Teams for Saturday's five fixtures will be announced in full at 6:20pm (AEST) this evening.
