Wayne Carey has revealed the top five big forwards he thinks will be the most important in season 2016.

Carey said he believes Lance Franklins is still the No.1 forward in the game.

"He is ready to burst. No doubt," Carey said on Triple M's Dead Set Legends.

"Apparently he’s had an exceptional pre-season which I think you have to have if you have a big year. Given what he’s gone through in the last 12 months and given what he’s been holding back, now that he’s addressed those things, he’s come back, he’s refreshed, I think he’s going to have a massive year for Sydney. I still think he’s the No.1 forward in the game."

The former North Melbourne champion also gave honourable mentions to Geelong's Tom Hawkins and Hawthorn's Jarryd Roughead.

However, Carey opted to restrict his list to players from teams that he believes are likely to play finals this season.

5. Jeremy Cameron (GWS)

4. Taylor Walker (Adelaide)

3. Jack Riewoldt (Richmond)

2. Josh Kennedy (West Coast)

1. Lance Franklin (Sydney)
