The Melbourne Cricket Ground is set to reintroduce beer cans for footy fans following a successful trial period from early this year.

The change will see the MCG sell beer out of a can for the first time since the 1990s, with the venue having placed a ban on the product and moving to plastic cups to ensure greater safety at games and events.

The MCG has implemented a quiet trial in the opening rounds of the 2022 season across certain sections of the stadium, where plastic cups have also been available.

Now, cups could become extinct at sporting events as the Victorian Government looks to eradicate single-use plastics by early next year.

Cans would also see fans purchase full-strength beer during day matches, with the change being carried out across all bottom-level sections and levels two and three of the members areas.

โ€œWhen youโ€™ve got a tray of four plastic cups itโ€™s very easy to spill the beer.

โ€œIf itโ€™s going to be better for recycling, thatโ€™s a positive as well if it means less waste.

โ€œIt sounds like a win-win.โ€

Cans were cut from the bar menus after worrying cases of angered fans hurling beer onto the field and in the grandstands, prompting the introduction of cups as a safety measure.

Beer cans will remain away from level four of the MCG, with plastic cups continuing to be served on the top deck.

The introduction of beer cans could also aid the stadium's battle with staff shortages, as service times are likely to be slashed as cans replace beer pouring into cups.
