Brownlow Medallist Matt Rowell issued a stern warning to the AFL on Sunday afternoon.
After weeks of performances emblematic of his team's current mire, the midfield bull went ballistic in torrid conditions in the nation's capital, inspiring his side to a 11.13 (79) to 11.11 (77) victory over fellow expansion side, the GWS Giants.
Rowell posted an enormous 40 disposals, 17 clearances, 16 tackles, 10 inside 50s and 881 metres gained - all of which were the most on the ground.
A down year, relative to his Charlie-chasing 2025 campaign, Rowell reminded the competition of his strengths, ensuring he and his Suns are not written off in the years to come.
Despite having less to play for than their charcoal-clad opponents, the Suns appeared the hungrier of the two sides for much of the contest. Mac Andrew (11 intercept possessions) patrolled the skies beautifully in the absence of Sam Collins, while man in-demand Bailey Humphrey had some clutch moments at the other end of Manuka Oval.
Rowell was visibly elated on the final siren, after a year curtailed by injury, rumours of a rift with head coach Damien Hardwick, and the emotional toll of 10 consecutive victories finally exhibited some mercy in the direction of the 25-year-old.
Speaking to broadcaster Fox Footy, post-match, Rowell detailed his joy.
"It's just a great feeling. It's been a really tough slog. this is what you play for - to get these wins. I thought the boys showed so much spirit today," he said.
"The boys love Canberra. We embraced the wet conditions. We played hard, tough, Suns footy."
The Suns, having won their first match for 86 days, face Brisbane and St Kilda in their final fortnight, while the Giants face West Coast and Adelaide, with all four matches essentially dead rubbers for the two expansion clubs.
