Hawthorn champion and Fox Footy analyst Dermott Brereton believes Carlton forward Charlie Curnow has the potential to be the best player in the competition in just two years' time.

Curnow has played just 22 games for Carlton since being selected with the 12th pick in the 2015 National Draft, but has featured in all but one match for the Blues so far this season, and has become one of their best young players.

The 20-year-old is averaging 13.7 disposals, six marks and 2.8 tackles per game in 2017, and has booted 14 goals already this season.

Brereton believes the sky is the limit for Curnow, and likened him to one of the best players over the past 15 years, Chris Judd.

“Charlie Curnow in two years’ time will be the best player in the comp,” Brereton told SEN’s The Run Home on Monday afternoon.

“The way he can launch at the footy and his athleticism at the moment…I wouldn’t say he is an athlete playing footy, he is a young footballer.

“Someone like Judd, you could see he nutted it out. He knew what was happening and with his acceleration, his physique and the way he was able to utilise his natural gifts, you knew he was going to get there with a click of his fingers.

“This kid (Curnow) may take a bit of trial and error, but he is going to brain it.”

Over recent weeks Curnow has been compared to Carlton great Anthony Koutoufides, but Brereton believes he's still got a way to go before he catches the Hall of Famer.

That didn't stop Brereton from suggesting he couldn't be better than Koutoufides in some areas, and told SEN he's already a better ball user by foot compared to the Carlton great.
