Western Bulldogs veteran Matthew Boyd has revealed some of the sledges he's copped over his 15-year career.

Before returning for the Dogs' clash against Adelaide on Friday night, Boyd played only one AFL game between round eight and round 16, meaning he spent a fair bit of time in the VFL.

Boyd said he heard a fair bit during his stint in the reserves, and was constantly reminded about his age and stature in the current Bulldogs side.

"During the VFL a couple of weeks ago I got a couple of good sledges like 'Boyd you list clogger' and all this sort of stuff, you can certainly hear that at VFL level," Boyd told radio station RSN on Tuesday morning.

"I think early days when you played at old Footy Park (in Adelaide) you used to cop a bit. They actually had to put the plastic canopy up over the race to stop people from spitting on you, that's a pretty good sledge."

Boyd also revealed a sledge directed at one of his teammates on Friday night, was the victim admitting the call got to him a little.

"I've been pretty lucky with the sledging actually, Matty Suckling got a good one from one of the Adelaide boys last week," Boyd added.

"He was chasing Charlie Cameron, whose pretty quick, and he couldn't quite get him and one of the Adelaide boys goes 'Oh you would have got him four years ago, Matty'.

"Suckling said 'that's the first old sledge I've ever got'."
