Essendon has revealed the extent of defender Jordan Ridley's knee injury after the key backman suffered an awkward-looking knee injury during the Bombers' win over the Adelaide Crows on Sunday afternoon.

The incident, which occurred early in the second half of action at Marvel Stadium and initially sparked fear of serious damage, resulted in Ridley being substituted out of the contest after an assessment by Essendon's medical team.

The Bombers released an update on Ridley on Monday, confirming the defender has suffered bone bruising in his knee, avoiding severe damage.

Essendon claims Ridley remains "an outside chance" of suiting up for the Tullamarine side's important bout with Geelong this weekend at GMBHA Stadium.

However, it would seem unlikely Ridley will be risked considering his importance to Brad Scott's side amid Essendon's finals push.

Following this weekend's matchup, the Bombers face critical clashes with the Western Bulldogs and Sydney Swans as they continue to battle for finals seeding.

Essendon's meeting with Geelong is fixtured for this Saturday, July 15, at 7:25PM (AEST).
