Essendon free agent Zach Merrett will not be rushed into a new contract and will wait until the end of the season to decide on his future.

The Bombers are keen to re-sign the silky left-footer, but according to Callum Twomey and Mitch Cleary from AFL.com.au, Merrett will assess how the new look Bombers shape up in 2021 before making a decision on his future.

Essendon has become accustomed to players waiting until the end of the season to make a decision on their futures after Joe Daniher and Adam Saad waited until the end of last year to announce they were seeking new homes in 2021.

It is a time of change at the Bombers with Ben Ruttan at the helm and a new-look side on the field with plenty of young talent.

At 25, Merrett is arguably at his most valuable on the open market and was linked to Carlton and Collingwood in the 2020 trade window.

A decision will need to made by Merrett as to whether he believes he can achieve the ultimate success at the Bombers or if there are better pastures somewhere else.
