Essendon young star Archie Perkins is set to return this week for the Bombers, but will likely make his comeback via the VFL.

After missing the last three weeks with a hip issue the return of the 20-year-old a welcome boost to go along with Essendon's recent form.

The Bombers have won their last three games as they look to finish off a disappointing campaign on a high.

Ben Rutten said it was important to get the minutes into the legs for Perkins before his return to senior football.

"Perkins has got to get through today but hopefully he gets some game time," Rutten said.

"It's more likely to be at VFL level."

Rutten said along with James Stewart and Massimo D'Ambrosio, Perkins needed "to build a little bit of momentum".

Essendon have named Stewart and D'Ambrosio along with Alec Waterman in their 25-man squad for Sunday's clash with Collingwood.
