Carlton AFLW midfielder Lucy McEvoy has fallen victim to a shoulder injury and will miss the opening portion of the new season.

Scans revealed that the ailment required surgery, with the exciting youngster set for a substantial stint on the sidelines.

Carlton GM of women's football Brett Munro outlined McEvoy's expected return in a club statement and praised the 21-year-old for her positive contributions to the club thus far.

"Lucy's surgery went well and we are hopeful she will be fit to play by the mid-point of the season," Munro said.

"Lucy's contribution to the team is so much more than her on-field performance, and she will continue to be a valuable presence around the Club while completing her rehab.

"While Lucy is disappointed to miss the beginning of the season, she has the full support of the program and we look forward to seeing her back on field later this year."

The new AFLW season is set to kick off next month, with the Blues hosting Collingwood at Ikon Park on Thursday, August 25.
