The Banner Man is once again crowning himself the king of AFL humour with his imaginings of banners for both the Richmond Tigers and the Melbourne Demons in Round 7.
Comedian Danny McGinlay is tapping into his inner poet, bringing William Blake to the football field ahead of Richmond's clash with Melbourne tonight.
While both banners tap into McGinlay's trademark rhyming humour, it is the Richmond banner that stands out, with its tongue in cheek references and self-deprecating joke that is bound to get both fans and players in a fighting mood.
The banner quotes the opening line to Blake's 1794 poem "The Tyger", however, it is McGinlay's cheeky ad-lib "Remember for a brief few years when we weren't so shite" that is sure to draw delight from Demons fans. This jab, while perhaps a little mean, is not unwarranted as Richmond is yet to win a game this season.
With Richmond currently sitting dead last on the ladder, they are unlikely to break their season long losing streak tonight. Melbourne, on the other hand, are raring to go, coming off a two point win against Brisbane Lions last week.
This confidence is reflected in Melbourne's banner which uses more poetry to reassure fans that Melbourne will win quickly, promising them an early night ahead of tomorrow's Dawn Service.
Some may cite the idea of Richmond winning as wishful thinking however it certainly wouldn't be the first time an underdog has come out on top and ultimately the score won't be settled until that final siren at the 'G.
